Best way to clean white football shirts please

My son has three white football shirts which he wears all the time and they get very dirty my wife uses a hot wash with Ariel washing powder to get them clean but this has faded some of the colours on the shirts which my son is complaining about (the gold star on his England shirt has faded.)
What is this best way to get these type of white shirts clean but retain the colours?

Try Persil 'COLOUR' tabs I find they get stuff very clean but also help maintain colours too.....:T :T and everything smells nice....#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

I agree with tanith, but I also add a scoopfull of Oxyclean. It really brightens the whites and gets rid of grass stains0
