  • I would be very suprised if you had to work 2 months before getting paid, never had to do that before, i am monthly paid and i got paid at the end of the first month, definitley check with your payroll dept before worrying yourself (hopefully) needlessly.

Well I am not sure on the legality of having to do a month in hand but I recently started a job which required me to work a week in hand meaning I don't get paid for mjy first week until I leave.

I think you will find that is incorrect - they're not going to keep a weeks wages from you for possibly 40 years until you leave! I think you are probably paid weekly in arrears, which means you will be paid at the end of next week for last week's work.

Hi there, i started a new job 2 weeks ago and have gone from weekly to monthly pay. Will be a struggle getting by untill i get my first pay but am able to just about cope. Anway, i have been told by other staff members today (have yet to speak to head office tomorrow) that i will have to work a month in hand meaning that i will get my first wage at the end of the second month!!! Does this sound right? I just thought that working a month in hand would mean getting paid at the end of the first month.

All i was told when i got the job was that it was monthly pay, and i havnt received a contract yet for me to refer to.

Any advice will be much appreciated

When I started my most recent job, I switched from weekly to monthly pay, and my start date missed pay-day by one day.

I had approx £120 (my old job was irregular hours, and my last week was a slow week) to last 4 weeks. I did the following:

    - Contacted my landlord and informed them I would be slipping into rent arrears, with the intention of doubling up on payday. They agreed.
    - Missed my council tax payment (I didn't bother informing them, though it might be a good idea to do so), and again doubled up on payday. All was fine
    - Abused my credit card to buy petrol, food, new clothes, etc., and cleared what I'd spent quickly (half on 1st payday, half on 2nd payday). I paid around £20 in interest, which didn't bother me too much, I pretty much had to do it, and it's long forgotten about now

If worst comes to worst, do you (or someone close to you) have a credit card or overdraft that can tide you over for a month or so? I don't condone purposely slipping into debt, but it could be a godsend for you.

HSBC 8% 12mth regular savings = £80 out of a maximum remaining allowance of £2500

    "3 months' salary" reserve = £00 / £3600

I have been told that they could offer me an advance payment but obviously that will just get taken out of my wages when i do eventually get paid, and so will leave me short anyway.

It won't leave you short, it will leave you in exactly the same position. Why would you think otherwise?
  • It's a reflection of how crap the company is in my opinion. I started a job on the 5th January this year and didn't get paid until the end of Feb for January's pay, and until the end of March for Feb's pay, etc. I haven't had this happen before in any other employment. I also have a friend in payroll who said as long as you have your timesheet in by the 21st of the month there is no good reason why they shouldn't be able to pay you by the end of that same month. I asked for an 'advance' and they gave me 2 weeks pay, but asking for the advance is just embarrasing and it's an easy way to !!!! employees off.

I don't work for them anymore as that was the 1st of many things that was crap about them. As far as I'm aware though there is nothing 'illegal' about it, although there should be.
