They are ringing twice a day now :( I'm frightened to answer the phone if it's a withheld number - but they're leaving messages on my answer machine, saying it's urgent that I contact them.

It's awful - when will they stop?

When they get fed up wasting their time and money.

Dealing with these calls is very easy. For example respond with "Hold on please" and merely mute the phone and walk away.

Well there are laws against harassment so maybe now is the time to tell them that you know this. Enough is enough and they are obviously not stopping by just being ignored.

When they call again have a confident speech ready.

Inform the Debt Collector - assertively but calmly, standing up during the whole conversation as it helps your air of authority I find! - that the registered keeper will see the parking company in Court, because this debt is 'expressly denied'. As such, if they continue to harass you at all by phone or letter for a denied debt then it will be them answering in Court under the Protection from Harassment Act.

Insist that they desist from all contact forthwith and pass the denied debt case back to the originating company as they are required to do, by law (I believe). AFAIK debt collectors cannot continue to pursue a debt which has been expressly denied.

The Protection from Harassment Act can apply to Debt Collectors and other companies, not just individuals. There is a ruling from last year which stated that this act can be used re Debt Collectors, in that case it was re a DC which was overstepping the mark regarding phone calls re an alleged debt with British Gas.

Tell them that you now expect no further contact whatsoever from them and if they contravene this clear instruction you will inform your Solicitor.

You don't have to put up with this.
