Loan taken out at my address

Hi guys,

I have a bit of an unusual one here.

Someone I know has their mail delivered to my house (bank statements etc.) as they work in this country and need a bank account to get their pay put into, even though they live in a different country. They lived in this country until a few years ago, and have never lived at this house.

It came to light today that this person, who also has a vehicle in this country which recently broke down beyond repair, took out a loan and gave my address as their residence. I'm assuming that it was an honest mistake that they forgot to mention it, although words will definitely be had, and I just want to see what position this leaves the house owner (my mum) in. Someone recently told me that debts/credit ratings changed recently so that they now go against specifically named people now instead of against the address at which they allegedly live, but I need to know what the situation is in case of a worse-case scenario.

Thanks very much for your help. :T

  • No issues at all. Lending is done on the person not the property (for unsecured loans). It will also not affect your Mum's (or your) credit rating for the same reason. :)

    Phew! :j

Thanks very much, Lee: I thought that might be the case, but I thought it was better to check than rue it later! :T

It wont affect your credit history but you might get molested or disturbed if this person fails to pay his debts and debt collectors come knocking at your door

I thought that. Due to who it is I seriously doubt that that will happen, but it was worth taking into consideration. Thanks!

What happens to the post that you receive addressed to him? Do you open it or re-direct it? Do you think you should let the senders know he doesn't live at your address now - whether you say he never lived there is up to you, but you could definitely say he's not there now.
