Help, home colouring advice needed please !!!

My wonderful hairdresser is emigrating to oz in december. Shes done my hair for over 10 years !!!

My problem is that i will have to start colouring my hair myself as i cant afford the salon prices they charge.

I have a midlengh layered bob, with highlights and a few lowlights as well, my hair is naturally curly (which i straighten) with quite abit of red in it.

My question is what colour or brand to use, i know home colours tend to come out darker than the pic, but no idea where to start looking, the last time i coloured my own hair i was 18 !!!

Any recemmendations please !!

  • Schwarzkopf and Nice n Easy always come out DARKER than the box, but they are good colours that stay true while they're in. So if you try these go a shade lighter than you would like.
Loreal excellence cream has good staying power and are the same colour on hair as in the box. But for the first time I might try a shade lighter just in case, because everyones hair type is different.

I used to use Feria, they gave really nice multi tonal colour, UNTIL they changed the formula, now its just rubbish.

If you have quite complicated hair, I'd keep to a salon tbh- hairdressers make it look so easy, but its not so easy trying to do your own hair, especially if its got loads of technical additions.

Sometimes I get my mum to do mine, could you get together with a friend and have them do your hair in return for doing theirs? can make it easier to get an even result and the highlights in the right places.

Another option is to go to a salon requesting models- try training academies, I don't know how things are in Stockport, in London we have a few, but also try colleges which offer beauty courses as they tend to need models. Not so easy every time you need hair help, maybe you could do this inbetween salon visits?
  • I know your hairdresser won't use DIY products, but why not ask her what she recommends. It isn't as if you were "sacking" her. Don't you just hate it when your hairdresser moves, mine did....

  • I am a hairdresser, ask yours to write down the numbers of the colours she uses. She might be able to look at the home ones and find a colour match for you, thats what I would do for my clients. Also if you decide to use the college you will be able to give them the colour combination she has written down for you.If you decide to do it yourself, make sure you do a skin test 24 hours before.

My son likes highlights in his mousy hair, and i've tried two different blonde dyes over the last few months.

Both times they have not come out well and you can hardy see the colour, and it makes his hair look a bit 'gingery' rather than blonde.

I used one from the £ shop, and a nice & easy one.

Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong... would it be better to use a 'salon professional' dye?

Is this the sort of thing i should be going for? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hair-SALON-creme-PEROXIDE-1ltr-40v-12-500g-POWDER_W0QQitemZ200428664162QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Health_Beauty_Hair_Care_Hair_Colouring_Dyes_PP?hash=item2eaa7ab562

My cousin had bright red hair and he wanted to go blonde. The only dye that would work was a super strong bleach from Sallys. You need to prove your a hairdresser to purchase it though as its mega strong! Helpful if you know a hairdresser.

There was a Sallys near where I used to live and I used to stroll in and buy what I wanted, so did all my friends and none of us are hairdressers or were ever asked a question;)
