Ceramic baking beans?

In Wilkins today I bought the ceramic baking beans for use in baking flans, just not to sure on how to cook with them?

Instructions say !!!!! the unbaked pastry case with a fork. Cover with baking paper and then fill with a layer of beans and then bake in the oven.

When you have the cooked flan case then do you add the uncooked filling like cheese and onion or egg and bacon - then put back into the oven to cook the filling?

Thank you all cooks for any help.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
Spring begins on 21st March.

tan, I nealy wrote that word again by editing and then realised what the instructions on the tub said were not allowed and auto removed.

Thanks guys, the flan is going to take longer to cook as before just put pastry and filling in the flan tin to start with. I recon with the beans in use the pastry case will be more crisp if I have it correct.

  • If any holes appear in the pastry case once it's been baked blind, patch them up with uncooked pastry before adding the filling, so it doesn't leak through and make everything all soggy.

Hope your flan turns out well!

I don't have any baking beans, just raided DD's money box and popped them on top of the greaseproof paper :)

DD and I had a home made vegetable pie for dinner tonight marked with our initials made out of spare bits of pastry, nomnomnom.....

hun if you are using shortcrust pastry - dont bother pricking it! have tried it with or without and shortcrust doesnt rise enough to make pricking it a requirement. unless - you have a magic touch - which i dont! also - when you put filling in - you dont want holes! i think the beans are enough to wiegh it down.
