tax credits overpayment their fault

wonder if anyone can help me with a tax credits problem, i have received a letter from them stating that they over paid me & my now ex-partner in tax credits. when i changed to a single persons claim i was told that i wouldnt have to pay back any over payments from the joint claim as it was closed and only if we got back to gether would the try and claim any over payemnts....
now i have received this letter. £789 is owing
if i am unable to get out of it is their a way i can pay back my half and not his as he will avoid at all costs having to pay money out
