Lentils - help, quick! (please!)

Threw some red lentils into the slow cooker today and have cooked on high for 8 hours with plenty of liquid, as usual. Just read the back of the packet and it says they must be soaked and are unsuitable for cooking in a casserole or slow cooker. Never noticed this on previous packs, but then never really read the pack either ...

Have I ruined my meal? Will I poison us all? Or continue as normal ... ?!?

If they are the little red letils i wouldn't worry i never soak these and have thrown them into just about every meal including slow cooked stews and bolognaises.
  • Split red lentils they call themselves. From Lidl.

I've rarely pre soaked split red lentils just rinsed them and thrown them in. I would imagine that 8 hours cooking in a slow cooker would have been enough though. Are they soft when you taste them? If so I wouldn't worry. HTH

I throw split red lentils into nearly everything in the SC and we're still here to tell the tale.

Can't understand why the packet would state that problem - maybe they're just covering themselves .

  • I didn't think you had to soak split red lentils, thats why they are so handy!
  • ISTR that the small red and yellow lentils don't need soaking, but the bigger green ones do.
