Adult teeth missing under milk teeth.

Had a letter this morning from our dentist to say that after x rays have been taken, they have confirmed that DS (15) has a couple of milk teeth where there are no adult teeth growing underneath.

He has asked us to make a appointment with their Orthodontist for a consultation but has also put us in the NHS system.

Does anybody have any experience of this and how long he could be waiting on the NHS - there isn't any urgency (I dont think!) but would be interested to know so I could look into private costs () if necessary.

Depending on where you live active treatment could be up to 2 to 3 years away or months.

Missing adult teeth can be complex or easy to treat ( I have patients in their 40 s who still have baby teeth where they have no adult teeth). It may be best to just leave baby teeth where they are or if there are some adult teeth in the wrong place more complex treatment would be needed which is better sorted out at a hospital with a multidisciplinary team.

You will be better off waiting for a nhs appointment if it looks like complex treatment . On the other hand they may just look at your daughter , tell her to look after the baby teeth and replace them when they eventually wear out ( if ever)

i'm in my mid twenties and based in south wales. i have the same problem as your son.

i asked to be referred before christmas, had an appointment at dental hospital in march which confimed that i was eligible for nhs treatment. they refered me to the anomlies clinic, and i've just been offered an appointment with them for this month which i cant make. so that's almost a year with nothing actually happening!

I have two baby teeth with no adult teeth above, as does my sister. I'm 23, she's 19 and neither of us have ever had a problem. Although my dentist tells me every time that I still have baby teeth. Yes... I know!!

I'm hoping his milk teeth will see him through! Will see what the private consultant says in December and if further treatment is necessary willl probably wait for NHS as I'm sure there is no urgent need for treatment.

DS1 was missing quite a few adult teeth under his milk teeth too. It was discovered during some x rays at age 9 or so when a lot of his milk teeth failed to fall out! He was referred to the orthodontist and the appointment came within 6 months or so. The dentist and orthodontist between them worked to preserve his milk teeth via fissure sealing, plus braces to move the teeth he had around his mouth evenly.

He is now nearly 19 and still retains his milk teeth in the places where he has no adult teeth and since they are in good condition the dentist thinks they could easily last him until he's maybe 30 or 35, when he could have implants if he wishes.

We got the braces (one at age 10, another at age 14) on the NHS and paid privately for the fissure sealing which at £15 per tooth is pricey but has kept his milk teeth in tip top condition.
  • I've got a gap where the baby tooth came out & there was no adult tooth under it.

It's at the side so causes me no problems.

I had an x-ray to confirm before the tooth came out.

I've never had anything done to preserve mine, nor has it ever been mentioned to me! My dentist told me some baby teeth can last for your entire life.

I expect they probably can last fine without fissure sealing - it's just that he's missing quite a few (ten) so we wanted to give him the best chance of keeping them most of his life.

My sister has a few back teeth that never came through. Nothing was ever done about it. I can see it would be a problem if you had loads missing or at the front.
