Treadmills = Weightloss?

Ok so after years of moaning and crying about my weight I have invested in a Carl Lewis treadmill!
I have started off slowly with 15 mins a day and have at last built up to half an hour today phew!
Anyway I was just hoping to hear of any weightloss stories via a treadmill to spur me on to do a little more.
Do and can you actually lose plenty of weight on a treadmill, it just seems like I need to be on it all day to achieve my goal of maybe 2 -3 stone off.
Many Thanks

Running is a great way of getting fit and toning up. It can also lead to weight loss if done in combination with a calorie controlled diet, remember this is the key as running alone won't help.
I believe that the rule is that in order to lose a pound of weight you need to be in defecit of 3000 calories so in other words burn off 3000 more calories than you take in.
Just remember that weight isn't everything, you may put on more muscle by toning up which actually weights more than fat. This may not help you on the scales but you will look a lot better.0 -
Hi,
I have been using a treadmill (also healthy eating) for approx 20-30 mins daily for the last 8 weeks and I have lost 19lbs so far. Also have lost over 8cm on each of my waist, chest and hips. I have found that by doing a little exercise each day it helps keep me on the "straight and narrow " with regard to my food intake!0 -
An average person running a mile will burn about 100 calories. A pound of fat equals 3500 calories so theoretically you need to run 35x14 miles to burn off a stone. This sounds like a lot but combined with a sensible diet there is no reason why you could not lose those couple of stones as Jumpapech has already demonstrated.
What you must be is be honest with yourself. Don't overestimate the exercise you have done and don't underestimate how much food you are eating(reducing calories intake will form the larger part of any weight loss i.m.o)0 -
Does anyone know if running and jogging in shoulder deep water really is better than on land, and does it burn of more calories.0

As there is additional resistance then yes you would use more calories per minute but chances are you would be able to do it for less time so it would even out"You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0 -

Depends how fast your heart rate is when you do either- I have a heart rate monitor and it tells me how many calories it thinks I've burned. It does this via working out my heart rate- the faster my blood flows/heart rate is, the more calories I'm burning. Makes sense to me. More calories burnt = more weight loss.
Running in water for me burns less then on a treadmill, but then I find it hard to run in the pool and far easier to do that on a treadmill.
However, running in water will help you build muscle probably more then running on a treadmill as in water there is more resistance.
Unfortunately Resistance alone cannot burn calories- hence why to lose weight you need to do cardio as well as resistance work. BUT resistance work builds muscle which in time will need more calories to keep it sustained, so in the long run- as long as you keep it up for months, you should begin to come close to the treadmill.
Having said that, if your like speedy Gonzales when you run in the pool and are comparing to a similar heart rate outside the pool, the weight loss should be the same.0
