Have you got a water meter? If so please advise me.

Options
Dear all, ST water are coming on Frid to fit a water meter however I was wondering how much space etc they need to fit it/ where it goes/how big it is? The stopcock tap is a couple of inches above floor level underneath a kitchen unit - is that where it goes? If so there's hardly room to move under there, let alone use tools etc. The rest of the pipe then goes behind the unit up to the sink, washing machine etc then upstairs to the bathroom. Also pretty inaccessible. Or maybe it goes somewhere else?

Could someone advise please? If they can't fit one I'll be a tad fed up as there's only me here in a detached house (albeit tiny) so I pay far more than I need to.

Thanks

DS

Severn Trent normally fit a meter at the boundary of your property(and not in the house) where the water mains enters your land. It will have an inspection cover.

They can fit them in the house if it is not practical to do so outside, but it is not the preferred option.

If it is not possible to fit one anywhere, they will give you an assessed charge.

Oh brilliant. Thank you so much for such a speedy answer. I'll go on a hunt the inspection cover later. That hadn't occurred to me.

Thanks again, a weight off my mind.

Just a further thought on this, the fitting on the boundary was the option some while ago, but with the new meters that enable remote reading it appears that inside is now the preferred option(according to their website)

Anyway if one cannot be fitted(inside or outside) then they will give you an assessed charge.

ours is out on the pavement, you can lift the cover and check it to keep an eye on water usage, but I've only done this once as we don't use much water anyway
There is no issue so small that it can't be blown out of proportion

If your property, Downshifter ,is old, then may well have lead supply pipes.
In which case might have to change to all blue plastic.

Mine is fitted on edge of our driveway on the pavement. I just life the metal flap, pout hand down the hole and lift the plastic flap on meter. Sometimes I have to push a dial on the meter to clear the screen as it gets condensation on it

That is what happened with ours with ST.

We have a meter under the sink that allows us to view usage whereas on the same outside wall there is meter that sends a signal to the reader when he comes around. This does mean he need access without having to ask us.
  • Mine is fitted in the garage - that's the point where the water enters the property. I can read the meter and work out how much I've used/cost in a spreadsheet. There is a remote black plastic device on the front of the house that they plug into when they need to read the meter. I'm guessing that any leak "my" side of the meter I pay for but any on their side won't register so any leak in the pipe under my drive to the house wouldn't matter.

    Until your drive subsides!!

Most companies however will carry out one repair to your property FOC.
