Stamp duty holiday to end 31/12/09?

  • what about the VAT reduction due to end soon?

to be extended or not ???

    Has anybody really noticed this
  • Does anyone have any idea if the government will prolong the stamp duty holiday?

It was a pretty dumb idea at the time so anything is possible, but I would say there is not much sense in this. I can see a case for the scrapage scheme and even for the year long cut in VAT, however I would doubt if it would be possible to measure the extra number of house purchases as a result of this.

I could even see stamp duty being extended to cover all houses (ie no threshold at all).

The appetite for tax revenue in the next 5 years will be insatiable !

    No extension.

They have even issued clarification saying pubs and clubs get an extension til 6am on New Years Day to avoid any "confusion" around pricing changes come midnight.

The days when I could stay up drinking until 6am are long gone, but I do miss the old days when closing was 11pm and a 'lock-in' was met with genuine excitment.

I'm with you on the 6am. Occasionally (say, once a year?) manage it at a house party or the like, but clubs? ..... til 6am?? No thanks.
Yep, 'lock-ins' were something special, but very much area dependent in my experience.
Where I grew up it was something you worked towards with a landlord, ie by becoming a regular, but visiting friends in the north, it seemed to happen at the drop of a hat!

I guess all will be revealed at the Pre-Budget report.

So next question, WHEN will we get the Pre-Budger Report. I'm hearing 18 December and 30 November as possible dates. Guess Darling will hold out until he gets some positive growth figures coming through I suppose.

I doubt the Stamp Duty holiday will be extended, it was a knee-jerk reaction to the fall in house sales/grinding stop of the economy. People are tentatively buying houses again(ish), banks are lending again (ish) so no need to subsidise it further.

VAT is meant to go back up in January but with the retailers complaining it'll affect January sales, the car dealers saying the same, we might just get an extension to take us upto the May elections. Who knows?
