Working p/t 7 hrs - do I pay tax?

Hi, I've recently started a p/t job working weekends, total hours are 7. I already have a full-time job and pay full tax and NI. My first wage just went into my bank and they haven't taken tax off. I'm wondering if it's because I'm only working 7 hours. Can anyone advise if there's a cut off point or anything like that as I know nothing about tax!? Thanks.

  • if you also have a full time job then yes you should be paying tax on the part time job and it will very likely be basic rate 20%. It sounds like your part time employer has put you onto an emergency tax code (a week 1 or month 1 code) which would result in no tax being paid on a 7 hour a week job.

If you stay on an emergency tax code you will end up with a tax bill for underpaid taxes at the end of the tax year.

When you started working for the part time job, you should have filled in a P46 and ticked the box to say this is not your only job. You can contact HMRC and inform them that you have a full time job and a part time one and that the part time job may have to be on a BR code. You will need your employer references from both jobs and expected annual income.

Thanks trevormax, I'll see my boss at the weekend about filling in form. I certainly don't want a tax bill in future! It's a fairly new business though and I think he's only just employed an accountant so I imagine it'll all be sorted out soon enough. Thanks for the good advice.
