Capquest chasing old debt

Options
I have started receiving calls and letter from Capquest regarding a debt of £3900 from 1999, I have heard from Capquest via mail every couple of years regarding this however I just ignore it and it stops, this time however they have started calling and leaving voicemail on my VOIP tel no. I reckon they got the number from another DCA I have been dealing with recently, I haven't spoken to anyone they just leave recorded msg asking me to call. What 's different this time is that they have sent me a statement which credits me with £900 and states I have an opening balance of £3000 the statement also says that there has been no activity on this a/c since 1999, question are what is this statement, why have they done this and what can I do, I should also advise that I have moved house in the last few months and these letters are being forwarded from my previous address

Is it definatley your debt? If so I would send them the statute barred letter. Whilst it will mean they have your new address if you are certain its statute barred it will put an end to the hassle once and for all and it will make sure that nobody can open post going to an old address and finding out your business.

I have had this recently, I think they have bought a lot of old Abbey debt. The letter went to my parents house, where I have never lived, in a name I haven't used for 17 years

Sent the 'statute barred' letter, recorded delivery, last Monday and received confirmation today that 'the account is closed and they will not pursue the debt any further'

    Hope that helps :D

Thanks. I will be doing this in the morning. I have also been receiving letters and phonecalls from them, which I have ignored. Relating to a debt with Abbey from around 99. It is definitley no longer on my credit file it dissapeared a few years ago so is over the 6yr period.

I thought maybe it had something to do with me having got into a bit of bother with my A&L current account and personal loan recently and Abbey & AL merging.

Not sure - I have no dealings with Abbey or related companies now, and haven't done for a few years  They seemed to be quick to write it off though as soon as they realised I knew what I was talking about - thanks to MSE of course :D

Same here, had the same letter, sent a letter back saying I didn't recognise the debt, and hey presto its been wiped. Anyone else who receives this letter, just tell them you don't know anything about this debt, and it'll be wiped.

sorry to throw a fly in the ointment, but isnt the debt only statute barred if you have received no correspondence for a continuous 6 year period?

Correspondence from the creditor to you does not start the 6 years running again.

To be effective, acknowledgement MUST be by YOU in WRITING signed by YOU; or by a payment.
