shelf tidying help

My mum only has one food cupboard which is very big but relatively short and very deep. So everything gets to the back where it can't be seen and cos it's too short to put a shelf in, the top half is wasted unless you stack things, and it's generally just a nightmare and never stays organised for more than five minutes.

She thinks she once saw some things like steps to put at the back of cupboards, to stand things on so they could be seen better. Does anyone know where we could find such things, or better still, does anyone have any good ideas for how to sort it? No carpentry type modifications though cos we're not allowed.

thankyou!

  • Hello,

Sympathies with your mum as I have a similar problem.

I think that bettaware do a plastic 'step' to put in a cupboard so you can see tins etc without having to stack them ontop of each other. However, tghey don't give you any more storage, in fact they use up some space themselves which then becomes deadspace. You could could probably replicate these shelves for yourself for free with a 3 inch square block of card / wood?

I have some wire baskets that slide under the shelf (no screws, the weight of the basket combined with the goods on the shelf keep everything in place). These are fab. No use for tins as the gap is only 3 or 4 inches tall, but excellent for packets, spices etc. Mine came from Woolies years ago but I'm pretty sure I've seen them more recently in Instore.

    Good luck with your solution!

    Cheers
    Flossie x

my mum used to use an old dish-drying-rack-thingy if that helps?
  • ooh very good, thanks everyone :)

I like the wire baskets idea and it occurs to me that we might be able to get away with putting some on runners so we could have layers that slide in and out....I will look into it anyway :)

If it's close to a normal unit size...you can get the storage accessories like runners and baskets and maybe adapt them?

I saw a mad shaped cupboard once with the doors used as half the storage space ..open the doors and the contents come with it on racks fixed to them? Butlers pantry I think it's called?

Yep lakeland do the step ones http://www.lakeland.co.uk/step-it-up/F/C/organising/C/organising-organise-your-kitchen/product/4806

Extendable as well so might be a good idea if the cupboard is a strange size
