Mortgage free but want a mortgage!!

We are currently mortgage free having completely down-sized life, jobs, income and moved location... We have managed for last 4 years, however life is getting quite hard financially (as it is 4 everyone I know) but with 3 ever demanding children, 2 decrepit cars and a hard working husband to maintain, I'm wondering whether it might be an option to take out a small mortgage on our property...

We have a 20,000 loan with Northern Rock at 5.7 % which is due to end april 2015 and pay £217 a month. We also owe £2300 on an interest free credit card which ends in April 2010. Our income is £24000 per year.

With the mortgage rates being so low at the moment would it be a better idea to take a £30,000 mortgage over 15 years.. Would this even be possible..

I have checked comparison sites but don't really fit any category. I would be grateful for any relevant advice please...
