Why is Nationwide Loans so INEPT?

Hi
I'm looking for some advise on repaying a loan to Nationwide.
Because of the postal strike I decided not to repay the loan by post, as the amount needed to credit before the start of November. I called the loan team and they said I could pay in branch.
So I trotted off to a Nationwide branch and paid the full amount by CHAPS approx 8 days before deadline. I then got a letter saying the funds could not be paid this way and the money was back in my account.
So I trotted off the Nationwide again, and paid again using BACS (which everyone along the way confirmed was fine). I then called a couple of days later to talk to Loan team and they could see the money coming back to them to repay the loan - great I thought.
Then 2 days later the money is back into my account as they rejected the repayment., AGAIN!
I've then spoken to them Friday and Monday to find out why they won't accept my money to repay the loan - but still have NO answers. They are completely USELESS.
The only one good thing is the person in the customer services (whilst she has no authority) is being as helpful as poss - just seems that the rest of the business around her CAN'T HELP......
Any advice from anyone whose had Nationwide Loans problems before.......
