I give up

Opened todays post and dd for electric is going up to £64 from £35 and the gas will be going up as well from £25 to god knows what most likely £70-£100 to cover the arrears. They set up the dd payments in the first place and massively underestimated what we would use. So I have to find another £90 a month to pull out.

I will recheck thanks. Problem with switching is I will still have to pay off the arrears.

    Oh hon,

I know exactly how you feel - the gas price rises have been ridiculous. I never trust how much they say I'll use after a similar experience to you - and I'm going to check mine again now.

I hope you manage to find the money - you've done so well already.

Not the best start to your day! (((HUGS)))

Ok, you don't know for sure what your gas dd will be yet, so, have you contacted them to gauge more accurately what they will be taking?
Have you sat down and recalculated using the new figures you *fear* will be put in place to see how that would look on the spreadsheet? Looked at all the nips and tucks in light of the new figures?

Try not to feel too dispondent, I know it's a shock, but take some deep breaths and try not to panic. You have already done massively well on your debt reduction since January and you mustn't lose focus on that.

I'm sure others will have more practical advice for you. ((hugs))

  • You can calculate how much your gas and electric bills will be if you take your own meter readings and know what their charges are. The gas is quite complicated if you need to do a calorific conversion, but the details are normally included on the back of bills. Otherwise someone may be able to point you in the direction of an online calculator to do it for. Then you would be able to get a rough estimate. Don't forget that you will use less gas over summer, assuming that you have GCH.

    Hope this helps...

Don't give up, you have come so far already. Have you looked at ways to reduce your usage of electricity and gas? All heating off, short showers (enough to keep you clean and fresh smelling) turning lights off, keeping everything turned off at the mains. Not using the oven as much, bulk cooking things like pasta and making pasta salad. Remembering to defrost naturally not in a microwave or oven.

Don't forget, we are coming into the summer so your usage will be lower then winter so you should see it being paid back faster. I'm on an increased repayment at the moment although I'm not sure for how long but I have banned the use of washing machine and dishwasher other then during the cheap rate for Eco7. Means we can do one load of washing per day if we get out of bed early enough :)

As for repaying it, have you asked them to spread it out further to help your repayments as I believe it does need to be repaid at a rate that works for both of you, not just for them!

    Big hugs though

Have you had an energy saving assessment? If soneone in your home is on benefits,,you can get one free, and they chuck in some energy saving lightbulbs usually, or a bit of loft insulation or something. Its the providers duty to make sure ( for what its worth) that everyone is using their energy sparingly. I know you probably are already, but there may be some tips you havent come accross. try https://www.energysavingtrust.co.uk for mmore ideas.

I think this is bloody mental what you are paying. I would be tempted, and I dont know if you can do this, to get a 0% card and pay it off via that route. And then move providers. Just as a guideline my electric bill was 160 for the last quarter, and thats just electric as we have no gas, on a 2 bed flat, me leaving the water on all day  and forgetting to turn the oven off. And new lodger being a cold person so the storage heaters were on. I think this is a great price, and thats with https://www.ecotricity.co.uk so a green one too.
Ecotricity is on uswitch too, so you can get £8 via quidco for it, along with other suppliers who may actually be a bit cheaper.
