Do these things actually work? Our problem is more because the foam in the cushions is compacted. And, because they are shaped cushions, it can't be replaced all that easily.

Besides, the cushions are held in place with velcro which won't work if the 'saver' is inserted in between!

What if you put a custom-cut piece of chipboard inside each cushion cover, in the underside?

We had a sofa with a bit or hardboard under the cushions for years because my brother and I broke the sofa by jumping up and down on it and it was very effective. I would suggest that thin hardboard is better than chipboard because the chipboard would be too rigid.

If the problem is more that the foam in the cushions is compacted what you need to do is re-stuff the cushions. I'm pretty sure you can get big sheets of upholstery foam that you can cut to fit the shape of the cushions but if you can't find any you could stuff them with foam chips or wadding.
