GE Money - Unpaid Direct Debit Fees

I have a loan has incurred some "Unpaid Direct Debit Fees" over the past few months due to redundancy.
I get hit £25.00 a time - which seems a bit over the top. Are loan companies such as GE Money subject to the same "fairness" charges as the banks?
Has anyone tackled them? What was the out come?
