  • I'd tell her not to overly worry, but get a second opinion if it will put her mind at rest. If she has a history of breast/ovarian cancer (more than 2 close relatives, or 1 relative diagnosed at 40 or younger) then she would be able to get mammograms early. I believe it is 10 yrs prior to her closest relative was diagnosed, ie, my mum was diagosed when she was 39, so technically I can from when I'm 29, but my old GP did tell me to fight for it.

Get her to go with her instincts. My mum had breast cancer, all the treatment etc. Few months later, she was getting severe back pain and our GP referred her to the hospital. Even though it was less than a yr after first being diagnosed with cancer, they sent her for physio! 6 months later, after 4 months in a wheelchair, they did a scan, and found the cancer had spread to her liver and spine and it was too late, she died 6 months later. Don't risk it with health. If you have to fight for it, do it. If there is nothing wrong, oh well, at least she will know.

Get her to go with her instincts.

How can you tell the difference between your 'instincts' and your 'fears'?

I think, on feeling something wrong with your body, everybody 'fears' the worst. I know I have.

Despite all you hear about such things though, if you are young, healthy, non smoking, moderately drinking person from a generally healthy family 'the worst' will probably not be what you have. If this is the case, then being irradiated for no good reason will probably do you more harm than good.

If your friend feels the doctor has not been thorough enough with his investigations, then she should seek a second opinion. But having a look inside the boobs with a big dose of x-rays is not indicated yet, and shouldn't be done. Sometimes they do just hurt (According to Mrs T.S.!)
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

The thing these days is 'breast awareness' and noticing anything that is not normal or usual for you

  • I remember reading that mammograms are not advised for the pre-menopausal woman as the breast tissue in younger women is too dense to get a proper look at and might not show up all tumours anyway?

    It's only a game

  • If your friend is in Northern Ireland then Action Cancer run a mobile screening unit or she can go to their office in Belfast.
