Permanent to Fixed Term

I've been working at my company for a couple of years now but had to make an internal move to a new department as the one I was working in lost a big contract so the work was transferred to another company.
I was on a permanent contract and now I'm covering maternity leave in my my role so I'm classed as fixed term, except I'm not. Its been a couple of months and the record on the system hasn't changed - I'm still being classed as permanent.
A mate of mine suspects that its because you can't go from being permanent to fixed term without a break in employment, is that true?? Or would it simply be that nobody has got around to changing my record?? I just want to know where I stand because obviously come the end of this woman's maternity leave the chances are there's not going to be a role for me, but is it going to be down to the company to find me another role (as my previous role no longer exists) or do I just need to make sure that I have another job in place on or before the date she's due back in work?
I'm really looking to know so that I can make plans for next year and beyond but I feel like I'm in limbo a little bit at the moment - if anyone could clarify this for me I'd be very grateful.

You are an employee with more than two years service.
I think they would have to make you redundant with proper consultation and notice if they wanted to get rid of you.0
