I don't know if the cost of travel and the diabolical exchange rate can justify the trip these days, can it?

My best tip would be to avoid Calaid and go to Boulogne; a much nicer place but just as close to Cite Europe for all the hyper markets. You could have a thoroughly pleasant day and still make whatever savings are possible.

If it's booze your after then Calais is your best bit.Look up Eastenders which is very close by.Has all your beer,wine etc.It's on a industrial estate so there are other places there as well.
Don't buy fags or rolling backy in France.Belgium is only 30 mins away and it's much cheaper.

We get most of our stuff on the boat and just head for the hills and enjoy our day out.

By the way, re tobacco in Belgium, someone told me the french are stopping cars and charging tax as you enter France... is this an urban legend because I thought it was a free market?

Try the booze-cruise .net website.
I can recommend "cheers" as a good place for cheap wine (£1 bottles) and also crates of beer where reasonably priced.

Returned from calais in the last couple of weeks, and would recommend;
- Tesco (Cite de Europe)
- Sainsburys (Opposite side of the main road to Cite de Europe)
- Oddbins (near Sainsburys)
- BeerandWine Warehouse (Majestic - near Oddbins)

Even at the poor exchange rate still managed to pock up bargains all under £2.50 a botle, and some 6 for £10 - nice easy drinking. Check out their websites for offers before you travel.
