Old style ceiling airer - Black spots?

Hi all,

I bought a bargain Victorian cast iron ceiling airer at an estate sale. Even though the main body is beautiful and useful its got mould/black spots stained in to the wood slats.

I have scrubbed it and scrubbed it but they are not shifting...

Any ideas?

You could sand it down & give it a coat of matt varnish.
Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!

  • I'm with InfamyInfamy on this one, the only way I can see to tidy it up and stop it from happening again is to sand and varnish. Sorry!

I had to buy some new slats for mine, £20 for 4 .
  • Dear Tygermoth,
when this happens to my airer I put the slats in my bath and wipe them down with thick undiluted bleach then leave it to work. This removes the spots, or at least gets rid of the worst of them. It also inhibits regrowth for a while, but make sure you rinse it off the surface before using the airer so as not to spoil your clothes.

  • Maybe you could paint it with bathroom paint (which contains mould ihibitor) to stop it happening again.
P.S. a ceiling airer is always called a maiden in my book!
