Bradford & Bingley nightmare

Back in the 80's I was married to a man who had had a car accident and was black listed due to his hospitalisation. He received compensation for the accident and we bought a bungalow. Because of his black listing the mortgage was in my name. At this point I will say that I wasn't working & didn't have the funds to pay the mortgage as it was going to be paid out of the compensation. This was under the advice of a financial adviser. I think the mortgage was for around £120,000 & was obtained approx 1989. My ex-husband was also violent both physically and psycologically. I finally got the courage together to leave him around May 1990. I left the house with just the clothes I was wearing.
Around 1996 completely out of the blue, I received a letter from Bradford & Bingley stating that the bungalow had been re-possessed and sold at auction for a substancial loss....& they wanted me to pay the difference approx £60,000. They have been hounding me ever since!!
I'm now a single Mum with 2 children and a mortgage for half my house as it's a shared ownership house.
The latest batch of letters ask for a lump sum, or for me to fill out a form telling them what money I have coming in or threatening to pass this case onto a 3rd party.
How much longer can they keep demanding I pay something?
Thankyou so much for taking the time to read this and any help/information will be very gratefully received x
