A month ago i informed my employer i would be taking some sick leave as i was having an operation on Thursday last week and that i was advised to take 1 week of work. Ive received the sick note from the hospital and it says i can take 2 weeks off work but as i told work i was advised to take a week would my employer be a bit annoyed if i informed them i was taking 2 weeks off or could i return to work when i feel ok to do so eg a week after having the op

If you wish to return whilst the med cert is still in effect, you will need to speak to your GP or specialist first and get clearance to do this. If not, your employer could invalidate their insurance policy.
    Gone ... or have I?

As you have been signed off for 2 weeks, then as dmg24 says, you need to get the ok to go back sooner.

Why not notify work that you have been signed off for 2 weeks, but if you're feeling up to it, tell them that you're going to seek if you can get the all clear to return sooner. Shows a bit of initiative and that you want to get back;)

You can string it out as long as you want to. There may even be complications or viruses that may stop you from returning to work as a result of the operation. Tell your doctor. It will be longer than a poxy 2 weeks though.

I don't know your employer and how they would react. It depends on if you are a constant sick note or if you don't usually take sick days.

If you have a sick note for 2 weeks, you will not be allowed to return to work sooner as your employers will not be insured. If you did want to return sooner, you would have to go back to your GP and get signed back on. Unless you have a real problem at work - ie you have a back sick record - I would take the two weeks off and have a complete recovery

It is quite common for periods of sickness to extend beyond what it was first thought they would be. A doctor will write a sick note for what they 'estimate' is a reasonable timeframe for recovery. However the human body is rarely predictable, and often will not get better on demand. In this case the doctor will write a subsequent sick note to cover his next best 'estimate' at recovery time. And so this can go on, in some cases for quite a while. I have known cases of employees thinking they've been signed off for a week, but actually not returning to work for several months. Your employer should be aware of this, and it's unlikely to be the first time they've encountered it. So long as you communicate with them, and give them as much notice as possible to any changes in timeframe, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

    Hope you feel better soon.
