Dpa breach???

Hi everyone
I have a quick query you may wish to comment on.
My mortgage company have recently sent me a letter/statement and enclosed with the letter is a very sensitive letter to another customer.
I realise that all banks are regulated by the FSA and are governed by laws on DPA and this is quite a serious breach.
What would you suggest I do. My initial thoughts are to contact the press regarding this but then I actually thought if they are sending me other peoples information where the hell are they sending mine.
I am going to have to ring them this morning but don't want to make the wrong decision on this so any guidance is appreciated.

With the best systems in the world mistakes happen. If it was me I'd just ring the co (am guessing it refers to arrears so I'd want to make sure the intended recipient did actually get the letter). I appreciate I'm taking a very laid back view of this but I have more important things to worry about TBH.A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

Hi Gallygirl
Thanks for your comment but mortgages have been wiped on the back of such breaches.
Have rung them and expressed my concerns about where my ionformation may be going. The line went deathly silent and then a meek apology came out and they have promised me a callback regarding the matter.
I shall keep you posted. Remember there are huge fines for financial institutions breaking these laws and they also get monitored something chronic on the back of lapses.0 -

Seen it done! The other party lives near me and if I took this to them I would almost guarantee they would annull it if he kicked off enough and rightly so they are not protecting the information they have on that customer.
I accept mistakes happen but this is peoples sensitive information and I hope it never happens to any of you because if it falls into the wrong hands and you have identity fraud against you life is literally not worth living.0 -
I think I would be wary about contacting the other party directly.
They might become suspicious as to how you came to hold information about their financial affairs, even if you say that the information was enclosed in a letter from the financial institution you would have no cast iron proof that this is how you came about the information.
They might thank you for drawing the DPA breach to your attention OR they might be suspicious about you and call the police.0 -
I don't think it's a wise thing to take that letter to the other party. It could backfire and result in you breaching their rights by causing them distress. If they want to be bloody minded, they then have two bites of the cherry - one of you, one of the bank.
Mistakes do happen. You have to separate if this was a malicious error, potentially reflective of the bank's wilful disregard to customer security, or a one-off. From what you have said so far, it appears to be a one-off.
By all means complain to the bank, but get things into perspective. You've shown no evidence of others getting their mortgage paid off, you have only said you know it happens, and frankly from the stance you've taken it sounds like bribery.
I get the impression you are being greedy and trying to extort the bank for whatever you can get, whether it was a genuine mistake or not - you don't appear to be doing the right thing, which would be to tell the bank, then tell the FSA there is a potential lapse in security with said bank. I apologise if my impression is wrong, but you pulled the 'what can I get out of it' card out of the hat first and tried to preach self-righteous second.0 -
