clothes all purpose stain remover-do they work?

you know the ones! various names but basically a powder you add to your main wash. but do they actually work? saddo that I am I just googled the main ingredient in the version I have and its a form of very mild bleach. what do others think? is it worth it or is there a cheaper alternative?

I wash most of my sons clothes who lives in a flat share . blokes together and a dog. Its usually quite rank TBH. I have encouraged him to possibly wash a bit more but his socks are stiff when i get them. So anything that can help here would be great:rotfl:

Depending on how many pairs of socks, and on what colour they were originally ;), I'd either throw them in with the darks/jeans etc on a pre-wash (so they get a double wash); soak them overnight and then put them in a hot wash with white/pale cottons; OR give them a separate pre-wash on their own if there's loads of them.

Encourage him to buy black socks all the same style - doesn't half save on laundry time (no matching up required and no stain removal needed ;)). If he really wants white sports socks (for wearing with white trainers), ask him to only wear them once before wanting them laundered OR buy him a scrubbing brush and a bar of 'household soap' :rotfl:.

I know the feeling well - I do laundry for OH's elderly grandfather (90) and middle-aged uncle (who has learning difficulties) - changing of socks/undies are not a priority for either of them . Sorry if that's tmi for folks at this time of the morning :o.
