How long can meat stay in the freezer for?

Ok how long can meat stay in the freezer for? I brought a packet of pork mince and i put it in the freezer and its been in there for 2 months now :o completely forgot about it and now want to defrost and use it. Thing is before i defrosted beef mince that i had left in the freezer awhile and the taste was not very pleasant. Was it a one off? how long can you normally leave meat in the freezer for? thanks all x

Packs usually say 3 months and I leave many in longer and they come out fine. If well packaged and not suffering freezer burn your meat should be fine.

I used some that had a use by date of Apr 09  earlier this week.

As I'm still here to tell the tale I guess it was okay. It was casserole beef and did have freezer burn, but a blast in the pressure cooker sorted it out.

To be honest, casserole type meat I never bother too much date wise, a joint on the other hand probably not more than three months because of freezer burn, which can toughen meat.
Woofles you need to get out of that house. You are going insane:eek: - colinw

apologises for spelling mistakes - google toolbar and I have had a hissy fit and I've lost me spell checker.
  • As above, about 3 months is the practical maximum, but more to avoid "freezer burn" than it going off.

However, don't forget that you can always cook it and put the resulting dish back in the freezer.

Depends on the freezer. Freezers have different star ratings. See the chart half way down this webpage:
