Ipod scam?

Wondered if anyone can help me, my friend sent me an email referring me to a site where if I register, complete a survey and get 5 friends to do the same we both get a free Ipod. It dosent sound right to me  so I thought I'd come here for advise as you savvy lot know what you are talking about.

If it is a scam these things need to be banned as when you are moneysaving anything free looks attractive for a while but we all know some things are too good to be true!!!!

Thanks xx

Depending on what site it is it may not be technically a scam, but probably the 5 friends need to each get 5 friends, and this probably has to carry on for a certain number of 'levels' in order for you to get an ipod. Also all these referrals will have to be completed in a certain number of days.

One such legit site is https://www.freepay.com (hope this isn't advertising, its nothing to do with me!).

Here, each product needs a particular number of referrals (ie get friends to sign up too), and each referral must complete an 'online offer' (not sure exactly what that means). It is probably a long and boring process to get your product but they are legit, I believe, and you don't have to give any money - assuming the 'online offers' don't require this - and I don't think they do. Freepay has been around for a long time. I don't know anyone who has tried it though. They get the money to give you free stuff from their sponsors and ad links - the 'online offers' will presumably send you off to sponsors websites and you probably have to give them some details etc. But they seem to be reputable sponsors (Egg, Virgin, ScreenSelect are all on the main page)

Just to add balance try this http://www.freepayblows.com/ . Maybe you do have to pay a bit of money for the referrals. Might be wise to steer clear if you're worried. Also not all of the offers are available in the UK. (The freepay FAQs are quite good for this info).

Edited to add: another useful related site http://freeipod.detwiler.us/ it is a couple of years old but explains the theory behind these sites well.

I tend to treat everything like this as a scam. As you say, if it sounds too good to be true...

Most of the time, if you submit your personal contact details to these things, you'll just win a lifetime's supply of junk mail, spam and SMS adverts.

The majority - if not all - of these e-mails are complete baloney just like all chain letters and pyramid schemes.

Just delete it and save 5 friends from the same deliberation. :)

I've had a free ipod before from recommending a website to 5 friends (it's a international money transfer site), so it's not necessarily a scam.

If it doesn't cost you anything and you've got a good spam blocker, it's probably worth a try!

thanks everyone for your advise! The email came through to my work address so probably not a good idea to register that one as the IT dept won't be too happy with lots of spam mails -we get enough already normally offering online pharmacy services for 'gents problems';)

So why does your sig say free(ish)?

Also it's against site rules to have links in your sig!
