Like I said, Moglex, the best way around this problem is to bung in a new HDD and keep the old one for back up in an external caddy. :D

It's foolproof, but a little on the expensive side unless you really want a spare in a caddy.

A spare in a caddy is always useful for backing up, etc. I would strongly advise people to have one.

www.ultimatebootcd.com - you can download the ISO image and burn that image to a CD - from which you can boot and use one of the many many many wipe programs included with the CD.

There comes a point where what someone is prepared to spend to recover the data outweighs the value of that data.

I'd not buy a new HDD for the laptop. Let's not make this overkill.

I also assume that you have some CDs that came with the laptop to rebuild it to the delivered state? Use those last ;)
In the United Kingdom 200,000 people are bitten by dogs every year and some people will die as a result. Of those bitten, 70% are children... So the question has to be asked....... Has the time come to ban children?

Hmm sounds more complicated than I thought. I don't have any CD's because I bought the laptop refurbished. I'll try some of the eraser programs suggested. Thanks! (although none of my stuff even if found is like Amir's :D )

In response to Moglex's first post, I agree, ebay is not a great place for laptops. But where else can I pass on a working second hand laptop, that still has some use in life without being paid a ridiculously low price? Another point is I'm really not a techie, so if anything does go wrong with the laptop I won't be able to help the buyer, without even trying to scam them.

    Don't know what to do?
    bad hair day...
