  • Do you run your heating all night then?

IMO 18 is too cold for the daytime (I'd be freezing!) but I wouldn't run my heating at night. Firstly on a cost basis and secondly because it's not necessary if everyone is tucked up in bed. I find it too drying and personally I sleep with a window open all year round.

I'd turn it up in the day but then off at night to come on 45 minutes or so before you get up.

  • All last winter the thermostat was set at 15 degrees but the heating was only on for an hour in the morning and two hours in the evening. Thermal socks and fleeces were worn at all times

I do not have the SC on at all, just the hot water. To heat our house we use the small coal fire in the front room and always leave the door wide open to send heat through the house. The fire gets lit about 3pm most days. To fuel it we buy coal and use a little but mostly throw on free/given wood. We also have convector heaters dotted around but rairly get used as the family are all out and about.

With 2 little ones you would need to keep the house warm. Just looking ours is 68f or about 18 C a little on the cool side. I think 70f or 20C if just sitting arround. I would not heat the house when every one is in bed due to the cost.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.
  • We have our heating on 18c but it is only set to come on for 2 hrs in the morning and 3 in the evening. We also have the hot water set separately for 2 hrs morning and evening. The heating is off at night after 8pm.

My daughter is 20 months and her room usually stays around 16/17c, occasionally falling to 14c in the small hours. I consider this a healthy temperature for a child, more layers but colder air makes for a better sleeping environment. I am asthmatic and couldn't bear to sleep with heating on. I would be really chesty if I did.

I am due baby #2 in Feb and the heating will stay at the same levels - after all, a baby's room should be between 16c and 20c to avoid cot death risks of overheating.

    Hope this helps!

Our heating isn't on during the day, its not cold enough it comes on at around 5/6 at 18 then if I am not cold it goes off at 7 if we're cold then I put it on again for an hour but its never on through the night I wouldn't be able to sleep and its not healthy... I don't think kids feel the cold as much as adults as they are always on the move especially at 3 and 5 remind your mum of the days when not only was there no central heating but bedrooms were never heated and the ice formed on the inside of the windows... we all survived (I'm guessing someone will argues with that statement) .. . Get your little ones moving around and they won't need it till the 'Winter' arrives... I don't consider its Winter yet...

Well, you know what they say: When Mums feels cold they make their kids put on sweaters. Except in your case it's Granny that's presumably feeling the cold?

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
