Alot of shutdowns are to enable jobs to be done that could be more costly if the workforce was in, like servicing equipment to reduce risk of breakdown, refurb, safety checks.

Long term it can turn into a saving

  • Well....firstly I am not going to feel bad for being narked for being able to afford a holiday as I said in an earlir post!!!

Secondly I appreciate teachers have to have their holidays in well, the holiday time ....that is why i went back to Uni and didn't study to be a teacher!!!!

I am just miffed to have to have our choice taken away from us.....I really feel for people who have no choice year after year and have to be stung by more expensive holidays and no choice because that is the nature of their job or have children etc.

We don't have children hence can choose when we go away at the moment......but this has been taken away from us again!!!

I can understand how you feel.

Before I had children, I applied for an admin job that had fixed holidays due to factory shut downs. It was two weeks in August and two weeks over Christmas and New Year and no other days off apart from bank holidays.

I was offered it but turned it down as we liked to go on holiday term time when it was less busy, and my ex's family lived 350 miles away so we used to like going down to his family for a couple of long weekends on his parents birthdays and stuff.
Here I go again on my own....

    Well that's life isn't it.......

Sorry but you're moaning about not being able to take time off from a job you don't even have yet and don't even know if you'd be able to take three weeks off under any circumstances. Lots of places only allow you to take two weeks in a block anyway except in extenuating circumstances or allow holiday on a first in gets the pick of the dates. I suspect your new work collegues might consider you to be a mite selfish demanding three weeks in school holiday time when you don't even have kids. Some jobs also don't allow you to book holiday whilst in your probationary period.

Seems to me you might get some time off you just wouldn't get three weeks -which is the same for a lot of people. Certain jobs have these restrictions -factories very routinely shutdown for a couple of weeks, as mentioned before education jobs don't allow holiday in term time, people in certain financial jobs can never take time off at year end or even at the end of the month and when starting a new job often the most popular dates are already taken by other workers. Just part of working life and yes I do think you're being a bit of a princess over it TBH

  • Exactly Becles,

We will have many years to come (hopefully) of having to have holdiays in school holidays only so whilst we have a choice I would like to assert it!!!
  • Well hence Duchy if we went in June I wouldn't have started work yet as would have just finished Uni and OH can get 3 weeks off.

Yes I agree I am being a 'bit of a princess' but this is how I feel and I own that feeling. I have had years of working before where I worked every weekend and all over Christmas and New Year. Part of retraining was to have a better quality of life hence I chose a job where there wouldn't be these soert of restrictions imposed.

Just because this is how it is THIS year doesn't mean it'll always be that way.
Often the first year in a job you get the "leftovers" but by next year you'll have a far better idea of how things work with your company so even if your OH's company do stick with an annual closure you may both be able to play the system a bit more (or as you say he may have another job)
I understand that you feel you've already "paid your dues" but when starting out with a new job sometimes you have to do it a bit when starting with a new job.

Maybe have a week away in June and another week in August -in some ways that might be more refreshing -not what you wanted but perhaps in its way a solution. A new job is likely to be far more willing to honour a week of pre-booked holiday at peak time than three too.

  • Absolutely Duchy.

I agree whole heartedly. For me I find having a holiday booked or in the pipeline a real motivator and with a pile of essays to do I need all the motivation I can get right now!!!

On that note I had best get myself sorted and head down or I won't be graduating let alone going away!!!
