Cap Quest - Abbey National Old Account

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, so apologies in advance if it is but here goes.
My other half tonite got a letter from capquest demanding a payment of £1,100 for and Abbey account he closed 16 years ago. He has spoken to Capquest who have told him that they don't knnow what the debt is for just that they purchased the debt from Abbey. We haven't had any letters from the Abbey and as we are regulars on here my OH has checked his credit history only two months ago from experian and all the others and he owes nothing to noone.
Why are were suddenly recieving this letter or is it a scam?
any help much appreciated.

Sounds like a scam to me. Plus if it's 16 years old with no contact I believe it will be statute barred
However, others know more than me so I'm sure someone else will pop up soon

It wont be a scam, it will just be stat barred debt which they brought for a £5 tell them to take a look at the limitations act.0
