I am doing something about it. I don't stand here saying saying someone should do something about it, and what do I get, "you are such a nanny". I actively campagn to remove these baddies from foods and I advise people people about their diet and the effects that improper diet can have. Problem is. PEOPLE DON'T LISTEN. They assume that I am doing it to be "boring", which is the attitude that most people have when they are told that they are doing something wrong or could be doing something better. That's what they said when being told that smoking was dangerous for the first time.
Improper diet is just as deadly as it can lead to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and even cancer. Not lung related disorders but killers just the same. And fizzy drinks are definately responsible for a rise in the number of obese children and childhood diabetes for people, there is no "might".
E is for additives is a very good book and it has some very good advice.Wildly my mind beats against you, yet the soul obeys. :heartpuls

Unfortunately many people believe that ALL additives are bad for you - hence E for Additives has become a bible of things to avoid rather than simply a dictionary of E numbers - many of which have been around for many years and are completely safe ! The reputable food firms list the all E numbers, the less reputable don't - people think, no E numbers - good ! Wrong !
PEOPLE DON'T LISTEN - I totally agree ! But trying to make their stupidity/ignorance/deafness illegal/unlawful is not the way to go. This is a dangerous path to set off on.
The more laws you have, the less they are obeyed. On the News a few minutes ago there was a story about getting number plates made. The BBC reporter produced a number plate he had had made over the internet - The Transport Minister's response - " Ah yes, but that's illegal". The new law hasn't stopped people getting number plates made - if anything it is probably easier now; before, you had to drive to Halfords.0 -
Thankyou moonrakerz, you do raise some valid points without feeling to the need to get them across by insulting me.Perhapse legislation should be concentrating on targeting the people that produce the food to give more informative information about the products that they use or that their advertisments aren't targeted at children directly or better still, at all which is what the thread is about.Wildly my mind beats against you, yet the soul obeys. :heartpuls

pink_phantom wrote:The fizzy bit is the problem, even in carbonated water as it discourages the bones from absorbing calcuim and can cause disorders of the bones in old age and a whole host of gastro intestianl problems such as ulcers. There aren't any fizzy drinks that I would call healthy simply because they have been carbonated. If water was meant to be fizzy, it would be. Also, carbonated water is acidic because of the fizz and is bad for teeth. Please look at the following site where a leading panel of experts discuss the effects of carbonated water and soft drinks: http://www.newstarget.com/004416.html
Many people do not think for themsleves either because it is easier not to or because they trust that when a product claims to be healthy that it actually is. Sunny D is a good example of this as it claims to be healthy when it has more chemicals that a chemistry lab. People believe what they read and hear which is why more stringent laws chould be bought in, especially on advertising.
Blue is an especially bad colour along with tartrazine. It is a synthetic dye derived from coal tar. It can be combined with tartrazine (E102) to produce various shades of green. It has previously been banned in: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland and has been associated with many disorders including hyperactivity. And this is just one colour, there are also preservatives, addatives, flavour enhancers, artificaial sweeteners to name but a few of the crap that they put in many of todays foods and drinks.
These colours are used to attract children even though they provide no nutritional content. Children have no knowledge that they are being decieved in this way and being children they probably wouldn't care but the government has a duty to stop this and parents need to be educated. They know that "colours" are bad but they don't know why. Perhapse if the effects were labelled more clearly then it wouldn't happen.
Another good site that discusses the link between diet and behaviour is here: http://www.monbiot.com/archives/2006/05/02/feeding-crime/
It erally is very interesting. In it, I took the following quote:
"A report published at the end of last year by the pressure group Sustain explained what appear to be clear links between deteriorating diets and the growth of depression, behavioural problems, Alzheimer’s and other forms of mental illness."
I still stand by what I said because from my knowledge, fizzy drinks can have as bad an effect on children as alcohol or cigarettes if abused.
What really grates me is that colourings have no real use other than asthetics. They don't flavour foods so why the need to use them if not to attract people and increase sales. It is all about money.
Thanks you so much for your infomation about diet and nurtition. I have one question. What about sparkling water that you get in the bottle? Is that OK?
Yes I COMPLETELY agree with everything you say pink_phantom. We know what food additives are not good for you but we don't know WHY? I now greatly reduce my son's exposure to additative (organic & no artificial ingredience) as much as possible. I could not explain to a mother friend why "mono sodium glutamate" was not good. I could must say that it was a chemical and it was not good for your health.
Turning back the clock on Channel4 http://www.channel4.com/life/microsites/T/tbybc/index.html and the book http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0755315480/qid%3D1149931548/202-0712184-1172635
""Woman with breast cancer are 5-9 times more likely to hav pesticide residues in their blood than woman without breast cancer"" "" ...children eating conventionally farmed food have upto 6times less pesticides in their body than thoes eating organicly farmed foods"
Just found out that organic food does not have trans fats.. also learnt that trans fats are even worst for your health (heart) than saturated fat.
Education is important but also so is legislation. Most people don't have the time to read and educate themselves about ingredience, farming methods and which is better than what. I personally had to spend a lot of time reading books, watching programs, surfing and asking people to get to where I am now to confidently eat less chemicals. Not everyone has the time for this. programs on TV like a 1/2 hour series show in prime time that easily explains that chemicals = shorter life less enjoyable (more health problems).
EVERYONE know that eating healthier is better for them. It is just that WE don't really know what this better really means. Better means less likely to get cancer, feel happier in your mind (less depression, anxiety...list goes on), more energy, do better in school and work (better concentration Jamie Oliver facter here), less crime (drugs & too much drink is not good for you and we all know all about the link to crime that this has..), beauty (better skin, less spots, cleaner smile,..watch 10years younger http://www.channel4.com/life/microsites/0-9/10yy/index.htmlto learn about unhealthy life and looking 15years older..)
IN the program mentioned above a person what reducing their life expectancy by 20!! Just by their unhealthy lifestyle!!! If you don't mind knocking off 20 years.. I you don't mind looking 65 when you are 40ish. If you don't mind feeling low and not being able to run in the park with our kids. If you don't mind not having the energy to enjoy you day more than you do already. After all looking good, feeling good and looking great is NOT worth it and it is better to tuck into a Macdonalds with a Piet coke with extra fries please.
If a drug dealer told you all about the benefits if his drug (and there are... feeling high to to point that nothing else matters) would you believe him? NO!! He is just after your money and that is all. So when SunnyD says that their stuff is good for you.. then you must use the same way of thinking. They are also just after your money and that is all!!! Read the ingredience and you will see a very very long list off stuff that is just chemicals.
There are all sorts of food scares and list of what is good for you and so on .. but is all boils down to eating REAL food. Chemicals, instant & progressed are not good for you which means that in the long run potentidally harmful. Eat a balanced and varied diet that covers all the main food groups. Too much or too little of ANY thing is not good for you.
I am not a nutritionist (easy to work that one out) but I am very keen to live a life with as little illness and feeling good as I can.“…the ‘insatiability doctrine – we spend money we don’t have, on things we don’t need, to make impressions that don’t last, on people we don’t care about.” Professor Tim Jackson
