Help with winter shoes/boots for snow!!

  • I have to agree with the last post in that the QVC item Yaktrax set of winter traction shoe grips (item no. 432206) :Dare excellent and I have used these for the past 2 years after a severe fall and dreading the coming ice. You can put them on any flat shoes and you can stand on sheets of ice and you will not fall over they are brilliant. I would not use anything else for complete stability and reassurance during any icy weather.

I would recommend Dr Martens, Rocket Dogs and Emus. I favour the latter two because they have fleece inside and keep my feet toasty warm too.

    Hiya
Bit of a random post I suppose, but I'm sure I'm not the only person who will be going through the same!
I have an unbelievable fear (always have) of falling in ice/snow, made worse last year when a colleague fell, breaking her ankle requiring pins put in
so this year I really want to find a pair of boots or shoes I can wear to work that have a decent grip on them. I work in a hospital so I can change shoes when I get in so they dont need to be smart!!
Can anyone help? I'm already starting to worry about it, and theres no sign of snow or ice yet!! But I'm sure you'll forgive me, as its not completely irrational!!
Any help would be really, really appreciated!

Im the same - Im so scared of walking on it and am so embarrased - friend at work slipped and fell on ice on our carpark and had a bad ankle sprain. Its fast approaching that time of year I dread - I dont drive so have to get bus/train and Im the only one at work who seems to feel this way - others think Its funny:o Ive even had small tubs and jars of grit left on my desk:rolleyes: Ive considered hypnotherapy but never been.

I have to get taxis if Its really bad to/from work £7 each way.

Ive been known to stand for ages trying to get across the small side roads getting in a right fluster!

Part of my job included walking students in between College sites and travel training - in winter!
I always use snow chains on my boots or even my trainers. One of my friends is blind and was always out walking with her Guide Dog,it was only after asking her how she always was striding out with no fear of falling, that she laughed and said look at what is on my boots.Needless to say I went on line and bought myself a pair have never had a fear of slipping on the ice since.
I bought mine from ebay, but hope I can post this link,

lets you see what they look like they are made by Rud,google RUD Snow Chains & Shoe Chains if this link does not work.Hope this helps.

Thanks Il have a look at those and the QVC ones.

I live in walking boots when the weathers bad - luckily my dress code at College is relaxed so jeans, boots and fleeces are ok.

Id not thought too much about winter until the clocks changed dreading it now............................

@alisont....i know, when i say i am scared of falling in the ice/snow people at work say "oh me too, you'll be fine though" and i'm thinking noooooo!! Don't think anyone understands the extent to which I am scared! I have never tried hypnotherapy or anything, cos as i see it, falling and hurting yourself is something than can really hurt you. scary

I wear my walking boots to and from work, and keep a pair of flats in the office for work - is that an option for you?

You just pull them on over the soles of you Trainers or Boots as they are made of stretchy rubber,if that makes sense,I have a pair like I said they are just fab,and to prove it last year for the 1st time ever I walked on black ice like it was not there, must admit though was a bit warey, but I shouldn't have worried.By the way found some on ebay a lot cheaper,so go for them you will never worry about ice or snow again.

I think Il buy both the qvc ones and the ebay ones.

Il pay anything if it means Il be able to walk about in bad weather and not slip - and feel more confident about going out and walking on our estate (which the council dont grit!)

So glad I spotted this thread:T

I was working in A&E the night the snow started, 90% of patients had fallen in the snow and a large percentage of them had broken something. My husband couldn't sop laughing when he saw how slowly I was walking on the ice, but I'm so paranoid now. I even had to refrain from shouting at an old lady who was running for the bus! I'm looking at buying some Dr. Martens now, but can't believe how expensive they are. I don't remember them being so expensive when I was at school!
