hi all, just a quick question as my maths isn't up to scratch these days. On payday i take a trip to Costco to do the main bulk buying for the month. How do you work out if things are cheaper? i.e 2.27kg pack smoked bacon, how do i work this out as pence pre gram etc, or pence per loo roll. hope catch my drift. Any help on this would be great.

Hey Lars...this is how i'd do it
Loo Rolls or items in a pack
Price per pack eg £3.00 divided by Total number per pack 20 = £0.15
Weight Meat etc Price per gram
Price per pack £15.00 divided by weight of pack in grams 1500 (1.5kgs) = £0.01
Hope this helps! Good luck with the shopping trip. I love costco!Nearly debt free....at last Roll on July 20100 -
Forget the pound and pence divider and just put it in as pence divided by the number. So you'd have £4.99 for 16 toilet rolls as 499/16=31.1875p each
Same for boxes of coke etc.
For fresh stuff, like meat, where you have 3 for £5 packs of bacon or 227g for £1.49 is it harder I know. You need to get it to the same for of measurement, such as how much for 1kg or you invert it and see how much you get for £1.
In the above example, it might be easier to see it per £1. If the 3 for £5 is 3*220g then you have (3*220)/5=132g for £1. The other choice at 227g for £1.49 is brought down to the same common denominator thus 227/1.49 = 152g for £1. Thus, the second choice is not only better value but also means you do not have to buy 3 packs !
You could do it to £ per kg which would be 1000/(3*220)*5=£7.58 and the second choice would be 1000/227*1.49=£6.56 which again proves it to be the better buy.
Watch out for the !!!!!!s trying to trick you into buying more at a higher unit price, just like Asda this week with mountains of heinz beans at the store entrances but prices at way over £2 for 4 tins and then some cheeses which were £2 each now at £3.64 or so and them claiming they have rolled back prices !
Be very careful that the product you bought from that position on the shelf which was a bargain last time is still a bargain this time as many times they just jack up the price and hope you don't notice !!!0
