My MIL gave me a popcorm making pan and two packs of popcorn kernals, that had been in her cupboard a while. I looked at the date on the back and they expired in 2001:eek: She said they will be fine, but what do you think, that must be a record expiry;)

lol, they might be a bit stale or some may not pop at all, but they certainly wont kill you or make you ill.
I'd give it a go.
Is it a 'whirly pop' popcorn pan?Just because you are offended, doesn't mean you are right0 -
Hi Outdoorlass,
My guess is that they will probably be fine but you have nothing to lose by giving them a go.
If you want ideas for flavouring, this thread is good:
HM Popcorn?
Do come back and let us know how you got on. I'll add your query to the Quick Questions on food safety / sell by / use by dates thread later.

Ha ha, I have a whirly pop pan from QVC years ago, they make the BEST popcorn ever cos you can put the sugar in first and it goes all crunchy and well, just delish really!
I don't see why you couldn't use it on a halogen hob, whichever hob you use though you have to ensure that you keep the handle turning constantly, otherwise it sticks and burns.
Have you got the recipe book for it?Just because you are offended, doesn't mean you are right0 -
I've had issues in the past with 'old' popcorn - it may still be fine, but it probably won't pop properly...top 2013 wins: iPad, £50 dental care, £50 sportswear, £50 Nectar GC, £300 B&Q GC; jewellery, Bumbo, 12xPringles, 2xDiesel EDT, £25 Morrisons, £50 Loch Fyne

I've heard that part of the reason older popcorn doesn't pop is due to reduced water content..? Not tried this myself but might be worth (and you're in the perfect position with 8 year old popcorn!) doing a little experiment - maybe soak a handful in water for 5-10 mins or so and see if that helps? If you do try that please feed back the results!0

Hi Outdoorlass
I'd be a bit wary of using it so out of date! Popping corn is so cheap, you might as well just get some new stuff!
