Is it safe to use this Oil?

Hello. At the back of my cupboard I found a 3ltre bottle of cooking oil which I forgot I had. However, the best before date is June 09, will it be ok to use in my deep fat fryer, I really fancy chips tonight something I havn't had for months. Done want to risk any stomach troubles though.
Thanks to all who reply.

If it says 'best before' then it will be fine to use. The flavour might be a little stale though. If it says 'use by' then it may not be safe to eat. I think oil is pretty indestructible, it is used as a preservative after all and your bottle is only a few months out of date.

Oils can go off. Oil oxidises which alters the chemical structure of the oil, it is known then as rancid oil.

Light (UV) and exposure to oxygen can cause rancidity. Excessive re-use of vegetable oil (usually poly-unsaturated) can also cause it to alter its structure to become a trans-fat (very unhealthy).

However, if the oil still has good colour and smell it should be OK.
