Partner not working through choice

Hi Guys
Not sure if this is the correct place?
My partner was made redundant and then chose not to work for a few months, he has subseuently done some contracting work and at the end has chosen not to work whilst enjoying the summer and looking at other options.
My question is, how do make ensure his state pension (don't laugh ) payments are kept up-to-date through this period? or is it not worth it?
Thanks
Murtle
