in Cutting tax
can someone help here please, just need a little advice.
my son was in receipt of income support for all of the last tax year, except for threes month in jan/feb/march this year when he was self employed. income support isnt taxable (i think??)
he has sent in his tax return, he owes the tax man nothing, but there is a huge difference between his personal allowance and the little that he actually earned.
now, my question is, is he entitled to a tax rebate on the basis that he got nowhere near his personal allowance. i remember that years ago, my ex husband had a large rebate because he didnt use his personal allowance but dont know if things are still the same, rebate wise!!
if he is entitled to anything, does he have to claim it, or will they dontact him??

You can only get a rebate of tax if you actually paid any in that year. If your son was self-employed in the construction industry and had CIS deductions (tax) taken off his income by the contractor who employed him then he would be entitled to a rebate. If he wasn't in this type of self-employment it's unlikely he paid any tax in those 3 months.
If he is entitled to a refund because of CIS deductions then it would be issued once the tax return is processed. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
