I depends if you want 'real' railway sleepers or new lighter copies.
There are various places which sell new sleepers (like eglantine timber for one).
I've heard it said that its possible to buy used sleepers directly from NIR but I dont have a contact. Also some of the architectural salvage places do them.
The old sleepers are soaked in some nasty chemicals and could be a potential health risk depending on the use (suggestion - picnic table is a *bad* idea).
DI used to have a signature with links to the League Tables for good/bad shipping charges for Northern Ireland. But I have since learnt that this is against site rules - so they are no longer here! PM me if you need them0 -
Hi Sootzer, whereabouts in county antrim have you got these quotes from??0

Those prices are about right. £20 is going rate in most places.
Becoming harder to find as time goes by.
Do you really want something in your garden which has has 100 years of excrement flushed onto it from passing trains???British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
I paid £18.80 inc.VAT for Grade B sleepers about a month ago in Newtownards. There wasn't much difference between them and Grade A's. If you can get them at £12 +Vat, that seems pretty good. If you are collecting them yourself, make sure you pick the best ones as there will be some difference in the quality.0

i would not recommend you buy them from NIR as i done this in the past for both internal and external project. they are fine when it is cold but as soon as it heats up they start to smell of dieselOn a slow boat to China0

Hi everyone and thanks for the replies...ive had a few sleepers in my last garden and yes there was the noticeable smells esp when the sun was on them and the occassional bleeding...but thinking on now...and with garden goin to be used much more between adults kids and the odd pet...im thinking on passing on the authenticity look of the real railway sleeper and goin for the safer option of the "copy sleeper".0

Hi everyone,
I might be looking for some railway sleepers to make a raised bedding area in my back garden. I'm in the Ballygowan/Saintfield/Comber area. Any pointers? (No pun intended!)Regards, Robin.2011 MFW # 34
