On single persons Council Tax rate..but partner is moving in,advice pls?

Hello,
I have lived in my flat for a couple of years on my own paying the Single Persons Council tax rate (25% discount I think). My boyfriend is now moving his stuff into the flat and living here permanently, so obviously i need to contact the council and stop paying the discount rate. Can I just confirm that I need to do this, although for now he is leaving his official address (bank details etc) at his parents, and also can I just simply remove the single persons benefit from the council tax, or will they start asking me for all his details so he is on the electoral roll and other official details??? Really I just want to sort the council tax out asap so i'm not claiming the wrong beneift!

Thanks in advance

  • Depends on your council I think. I have recently moved in with my sister and she just had to call and give my name etc and advise that i'd moved from a different council area.

On the other side of the coin my husband is now claiming single person discount and I have been sent a letter requesting proof of legal proceedings for the seperation etc! Quite frankly lots of personal information that I dont feel I should have to provide to them!! Have shelved it for a bit!

You can get him on the electoral role online - really easy.

You definitely need to inform them, I think you can have 4-6 weeks grace though they may backdate it, they will want his details, you can't just say i'm no longer on my own and not tell them who it is unfortunately thats not the way big brother works!

CT admin aren't interested if a person who pays CT is on Electoral Roll or not. They may be interested if someone on ER doesn't pay CT.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Lincroft1710 is correct - we are happy enough that somoene tells us they have moved in without having to chase people for the information. Its very rare we look at the Electoral Roll to check occupancy, normally its only once a residencey dispute has started that we would use it to check.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Brill thanks everyone, i will contact them now, just sounds good that i can sort it myself quickly without having to get everyone involved like his family etc!
