Mobile Phone Contracts

I am now looking at all ways to reduce my outgoings. I have four mobile phone accounts, two are for kids at University. Called the provider and they were not at all helpful. You are tied in to the contract and they won't let you out. Does anyone know how to get out of these contracts, I suppose one way is to make them a creditor? One contract does end soon so one kid is going to have to find their own contract. I have been with this supplier for a number of years pay around £100 a month and have been told I can have a £5 a month loyalty bonus as a gesture of goodwill. I suppose it's a step in the right direction but I really want to reduce the bill dramatically - any ideas?

Who are your contracts with? Depending on how long you've held the contract and what phone you have you should be able to take a step down a tariff.

I know O2 will only let you take a step down per month on the tariff scale and they will only let you do this after a few months (3 or 6?).

Also orange will let you transfer the contract to someone else after 3 months if its in good standing and the other person passes a credit check?

Might be worth transferring the contracts to the kids and letting them pay themselves?

They are all with T-mobile and the contract apparently says you can only step down a tariff in the last month of the contract - or so they say! Interesting thought about transferring the account and payments across, not students score too highly on credit rating but maybe worth looking into.

I've had a look around on the net and it looks like T-Mobile do state this in their terms and conditions, look at your contract under section 2.7. It might state it there.

You might want to try appealing to them by writing though, explain your situation and that you can commit to a certain tariff (the lowest) and see what they say.

I think I've read before that T-mobile are more difficult than the other providers to reduce tariffs etc. May be worth looking on the Mobile Phone Subboard of Phones, Web & TV to see if there are any suggestions on persuading T-mobile.

I have also tried to lower my tariff with T-mobile, to no avail :(

Ah well, lesson learnt anyway: no more contract for me :p

I stick to PAYG. If money is tight the phone doesn't get credit - hardly the end of world, and feel that too many people have become too dependant on these things.

It makes you wonder how we coped before they came along.

I really agree with you Reggie, and trust me when I said that I have learnt my lesson :o. Even when I'm back to f/t employment, I'll stick with PAYG. Thank God I have enough to pay for the bill every month.

Impetus, did you try going into a branch? I don't know if they can do anything, but it might be worth a try. I often find that when you actually see the people you're talking to, it is easier to convince (see how I got talked into signing up for a contract, hehe :p;))
