    The irritant in chillis (capsaicin...sp?) isn't water soluble so doesn't wash off easily. It is fat soluble though, so moisturising hands with olive oil, then washing in warm soapy water should get rid of it.

    That's why drinking water doesn't help much with spicy food - milk is much better because of the fat content. :)
