still waiting for tax rebate!!

hi all,
i am a long time lurker on this forum but only registered now.

my problem is this. i applied for a tax rebate early june this year for tax paid on my two jobs the previous tax year (tax code was BR for both jobs). i applied for this by visiting my local tax office... they told me to write a simple letter there and then with the all the usual stuff like "this is my only source of income"etc and attach both p60s from m two jobs. i was told these would be sent to the relevant tax office and i would receive the original copies plus any tax rebate in 8-10 weeks.
ihave been waiting patiently til then to see i big fat cheque arrive through the post. however, about 21 weeks later i have yet to hear anything from them?!!!!
i have heard that there were some problems handling tax rebates this year because of a new computer system but surely it shouldn't take this long?!
should i preesume my application has been lost and contact someone... and if so how should i go about doing this?!

on a side note, i recently left my second job and have a p45 from them... should i take this to the tax office, claim back tax from that job and also mention i am still owed money from the previous tax year?

any help will be greatly appreciated, i reckon i'm owed over £1000 and this would really come in handy at this time of year. my patience has run out.

hiya, give them a ring and chase it up. i applied for an allowance on my tax back in may, i actually recieved it this month so may just be a case of it taking time to sort out but no harm in ringing them

Hi, you need to go on the HMRC website, find the relevant phone number and call them. I applied for my tax rebate via my local office at the end of May and after calling them every fortnight finally received it last week. Good luck!

I also applied for a rebate in June and got mine about 3 weeks ago. There have been problems this year, but do chase them to find out where it is in the system.

As for this year, I'm not sure they'll be any rebate due as your personal allowance is still being allocated to your first job. Unless of course by quitting your second job you will drop down from higher rate to basic rate bracket. Even so, you may find you have to wait till the end of the tax year (Apr 2010) to claim.

Hi there, what makes you think you have overpaid this current tax year also? Have both your jobs beenm operating BR code still into this tax year? If you give me the figure from your p60 I am able to tell you a rough estimate of what you a likely to receive. But for this year, assuming your code has been corrected for one of your jobs, i.e is now 6475, BR is correct for your second source of income, Regards

i've already worked out what i'm owed. and both jobs were taxed at BR.... my single currrent job still is.

i usually dont bother correcting IR on my tax overpayments... i treat it as a kind of savings account so i get a nice fat cheque out of them... it's just taken about 10x as long to receive this year.

I too am waiting for a rebate. They put me on the wrong code 10 years ago, have admitted their fault, changed my code but still no rebate. I have been shouted at, lied to and ignored. I applied in August and am still waiting for £2000. I was told my info was lost, sat on someones desk, somewhere in the system which apparently has no tracking system AT ALL, in the post and then not even received.

Also told that their postal system takes almost 3 weeks as they pass it to the post office who then post it 'when they have time' (Tax office's words not mine) I have been told over and over that 'these things take time.'

It's been nearly four months now. They have my money and are refusing to pass it back to me for some strange reason. I'm sure if I owed it to them I would have been in court by now if I had refused to pay as they have.

The whole system needs an overhaul and the staff need training on how to deal effectively with people and also how the system they work for actually operates as most of them I dealt with didn't know.

I have dealt with at least 10 different people who have ALL told me different things, many of which have been completely untrue.

If all this is correct then complain bitterly and ask from transcripts of all the instances where you have been shouted at or lied to!

The staff are fully trained, we dont lie to people, we dont fob you off, we provide you with the info that we are given by the managers.

It is your obligation to ensure that your code is correct.

As for the tracking system, HMRC do not have the manpower to log everything they receive on the system and therefore we cannot tell if anything has been receivd until it is dealt with. THIS IS TRUE. (Thanks to the government cutting HMRC jobs which the general public seem to agree with at every opportunity but complain about when they cant get any help from HMRC).

As for the overhaul, thats exactly what its just had in the summer, we were offline for weeks whilst the new system was implemented and its working a lot better than the old one (as far as we can see so far). If you sent your claim in Aug then your repayment should be with you by the 11th Dec if my memory serves me right (I will correct this if i find it to be wrong), I understand your frustration believe me if it was my cash I'd want it too.

Dont get me wrong here, i'm not saying whats going on is right but believe me the staff are doing their best, we are complained at from 8-8 every day, all day due to these backlogs and working in the contact centre we cant do anything pro-active about it as all the details are in the back offices, miles away from us.

Seriously ring the tax office and see whats happening, you should have been dealt with by now, the contact centre staff will chase it up for you, hope it comes through soon for you.

thanks for your help everyone. i finally got round to re-visiting the tax office and they said a cheque was issued for £1206.80p in august! apparently it was sent to the wrong address as my details weren't up to date.
silly me for not going to them sooner. they are also adjusting my tax code so should receive even more at some point.
