and with retirement age increasing perhaps if you buy while still at university maybe you could stretch it out to 45 or even 50 if you like?

Please tell me that was sarcastic?

I guess the solution to the problem for all those who want cheaper housing is to assassinate all those who are willing to initially pay 60% of their income on their home.

No assassinations, no change in attitude I'm afraid kids.

However it is an ex-LA property and chances are it's in a rough area - do a young couple bringing in £40k pa really want to live somewhere like that, and pay £800 per month for the pleasure when their next door neighbour gets £250 housing benefit per month to live in an almost identical one?

That is why houses are overpriced.

That's pretty much exactly the situation we are in. In fact we bring in closer to £50K pa. We bought an ex-local authority home in September 2007 for £105K. We could have stretched ourselves and bought elsewhere but we are not snobs so are not fussed about the house being ex-local authority. Our neighbours are just fine despite the area having a reputation for being rough. In fact I have had MUCH worse neighbours in other 'more affluent' parts of this and other cities. As we bought such a low priced home we have been able to save £27K over 2 years between us and now our mortgage is only £78K. As such we are already paying £125 less a month than it would cost us to rent the same home.

    That is in 2 years!

I think some people on this site really need to lower their expectations and sort out their attitudes.

You would then only need / want a smaller house.

Unless you were committed to living alone for a good few years, it would be more sensible to rent.
It is still almost impossible for a single person to buy a small place alone, on their own.

One is never committed to living alone for a good few years, you just wake up when you're old and realise you never found anybody. Being single isn't a choice and not all single people are young and partying. There must be thousands of us that just plod along and never meet anybody worthy. Even renting, alone, is very expensive.

Sounds like you just need to go to an area where it's cheaper to buy / rent.

Maybe it would end up with towns of singles. Could be good, sort of like an upscale dating agency ;)
