Only buying basics/smartprice/value?

Has anyone had success with buying only the lowest ranges in supermarkets??

Am currently trying various Smartprice products, so far pleased with what I've tried. Sat online and browsed all the smartprice items..there were loads and loads

Crazy idea to try and do all smart price for a month??

Currently use the following items:
Rice pudding
12 packs toilet roll
chopped tomato
sliced carrots
Oranges
Root veg packs

Hope the thread is okay, did a search, found a good thread on bad/good products but not this specific idea lol

Thanks in advance :o

  • Just remember that the budget lines are not always the cheapest! I always buy the cheapest lines for frozen veg, but I'm always wary of buying cheap meat like sausages and burgers. Better to make these home made I find.

I dont think this is a crazy idea at all. I have done this for a couple of years now.

I only buy smart price, value or basics unless there is a special offer on a
branded one which works out cheaper, then I stock up on that.

I also only buy meat that is on offer or reduced. I think the trick is to keep
a stock and then you dont have to buy unless its on offer.

We've switched to a lot of the basics etc stuff when it is the cheaper option(as has been said, do double check as they don't always work out better than offers ) and virtually all of it has been totally fine. Really like the basic crisps at sainsbury's 47p for 12 bags of ready salted, they are smaller bags which is fine by me ;)

Basics jaffa cakes are scrummy. Have found the cereals - apart from porridge oats - to be not worth the saving.

I am usually happy to buy value fruit and veg etc. I'm also a meat at reduced or offer prices person, we've cut down on meat A LOT and it really helps the budget, check the fresh meat "butcher" counter for offers too, I got a huge leg of lamb for £4 the other week at sainsbury's and some steak, can't remember the type, not sirlon but another good cut for £1.50 :)

Making a big value veg casserole with dumplings today, have drastically reducded herbs to go in it too :D

So my opinion is give it a try you might like some items btter than your normal purchases.
  • If you are relying on the Sainsbury's Basics range, the following post would be useful to you:

This was actually the inspiration for my Sainsbury's Basics blog, which tries to put together meals out of Basics items, with sensible exceptions (eg, cooking oil and milk, which has no Basics equivalent, or soya sauce, for one particular post). Effectively it's a longer-term version of the Tesco Value Me livejournal put up some time ago...
