electric pre-pay overcharges

Hi there
I live in a medium sized 2 bed top floor flat with 1 other person. so far, over the last 4 years we have paid somewhere in the region of £6000+ on our electirc pre-pay meter. this seems far too much to me, especially as utility bills only really shot up 2 years ago. Can anyone please tell me if this does sound excessive and if so, how to go about claiming some of it back. Many thanks
