do stores accept returns without proof of purchase?

Options
My Son has got 2 tranformers for his birthday exactly the same so we want to return one and upgrade for a better one. One of the toys were bought from toyrus but we've no receipt. Doees anyone know or had experience of exchanging items without proof of purchase?

Some stores do - the law though actually states that unless something is faulty they actually don't need to accept it - but for customer service reasons store tend to do it....

Some places may offer an exchange, I doubt many will give you a refund, I've had things exchanged in Tesco without a receipt bu5t it was Tesco clothing, so obvious it was from there. I doubt Toys-rs will help at all, they don't have any concept of good customer service.

just back. I did want to buy a dearer one that toyrus do but they said they couldn't accept it without a receipt. So I didn't buy the big one. Ah well.
    Thanks anyway
  • I've got a brand new ps3 game still in it's packaging I need to take back without a receipt!

Again do you think game/ hmv will take it back if I ask for a credit note or pick something else?
  • You could always put it aside in the "party present" cupboard, just make sure you make a note of who gave you it (and it's duplicate) so you don't give it back to the same person!! (Ooooooooooooops!)

Are Game and HMV the same company?..I would think if there was a barcode or security seal or something that could confirm that you bought it from that particular store it would be Ok and they may let you exchange, but you would need to know what store it came from 1st,
Just today i took a pair of horse riding boots back to Tesco(wrong size)I didnt have the receipt but the guy just "scanned"the barcode and gave me my refund in the form of a giftcard(wouldve got cash if id had receipt)

That's why many places won't take it back without a receipt because people like you abuse the system by attempting to refund products that weren't purchased from that company.

In my experience the system is in place not because they were purchased elsewhere but because the goods were stolen from the store. It is a known way for thieves to get cash...steal an item then get an accomplice to go back in the store later and ask for a refund in cash. It is a very widespread scam as obviously getting full retain price is better than getting a fraction of the value selling the items down the pub.

Sadly a lot of thieves try it on with small shops as they are generally more flexible and trusting, which is why small businesses selling high value items need proper computerised till systems so they can look back through past purchases rather than buying the cheapest till on Ebay.
